Arthritis Treatment

Arthritis is the most common cause of disability in the nation. An estimated 50 million U.S. adults, about 1 of 5, report doctor-diagnosed arthritis with numbers expected to increase sharply. Arthritis is commonly referred to as inflammation of joints.

Different types of Arthritis include:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Post-Traumatic Arthritis
  • Paget's Disease
  • Avascular Necrosis

The most encountered form of arthritis is osteoarthritis, sometimes referred to as degenerative joint disease which affects the cartilage around the joints. It is thought that a number of factors cause this condition, including the natural aging process, joint surgery, and repetitive stress from certain jobs or sports activities. Diabetes, gout and some genetic conditions may also put at risk. Some of the frequently reported symptoms include pain, swelling, joint stiffness and even constant ache around the joint. This results in limited functionality even in performing simple everyday tasks. Prolonged or untreated arthritis can often lead to surgery.

Common treatments for Arthritis:

  • Acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS)
  • Bracing
  • Physical Therapy
  • Joint replacement
  • Injections (cortisone or visco supplementation)

After thourogh evaluation of your condition, Dr. Whaley will determine the best treatment plan, potentially including Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS), to help you reach your goals.
